Используются в составе лосьонов и кремов, гелей после бритья, солнцезащитных средств. Одним из основных свойств соединения является способность абсорбировать жидкости в 200—300 раз больше собственной массы. 
Представляет собой анионный полиэлектролит с отрицательно заряженной карбоксильной группой в основной цепи.
Полиакрилат натрия предназначен для стабилизации и снижения показателя фильтрации глинистых буровых растворов, инкапсуляции выбуренной горной породы, укрепления стенок скважин. Способствует формированию тонкой, плотной, малопроницаемой фильтрационной корки. Эффективен как в диспергированных системах с высоким содержанием твердой фазы, так и в недиспергированных растворах с низким содержанием твердой фазы.
